Given MacDonald has been focused on growing his clients’ businesses through marketing automation for nearly the past decade, it’s no surprise he’s expanding his field of expertise from solely search engine optimization to social media marketing. Influencer marketing specifically has reportedly been generating a $6.50 return on investment for every $1 spent by brands.

Keyword Scout, his first company, was an “overnight success” – attracting over 1000 customers in the first 4 months of business. The tool was a keyword research tool used by search engine optimization marketers to find keywords and phrases with low competition, yet high commercial intent. After losing his PayPal account due to being under the age of 18, MacDonald was forced to ultimately discontinue the once-successful project.

His next major focus in the software space was SerpClix, a tool that helped websites rank higher on Google. The company racked up hundreds of clients within its first 12 months of business and was quickly acquired around the time MacDonald was graduating from the University of Toronto.

His new company, Shout, has been reportedly in development for over 2 years before launch. The bootstrapped venture has already attracted thousands of trial signups from agencies and Fortune 500 brands.
