In 1968, Janis decided she wanted a Porsche and found one for sale at $3500 with some damage due to an accident on its front end. Rather than have Dave Roberts repair the car as he had been instructed,  Janis instead commissioned him to paint “The History of The Universe” all over it and give his personal touch by adding psychedelic patterns across its shiny white exterior surface.

This would later become one of San Francisco’s most recognizable cars before being stolen from her garage in 1969 when someone realized they couldn’t drive such a conspicuous vehicle around town without attracting suspicion–so they spray painted their new acquisition gray so nobody could recognize it. The car was later recovered and the mural restored.

When Janis Joplin died in 1970, her manager Albert Grossman used the car as a courtesy vehicle. After falling into disrepair it was returned to the family and they restored it before loaning it out for display at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
