A sharply-dressed commuter has been filmed brutally beating a man on a New York City subway platform in a seemingly random rush-hour attack.
It happened on Tuesday, February 27, during the evening rush hour at Manhattan’s 42nd St-Times Square subway.
NYPD detectives have released footage of the incident to try to catch the man who launched the attack.
Police sources said the attacker thought the victim gave him a funny look on the train and that is what prompted the attack.
He was filmed suddenly lunging at the victim and hitting him repeatedly in the head as he cowered on the platform.
The commuter was on the train and had just gotten off when he launched the attack.
Surveillance footage of the incident begins with the victim already on the platform.
After hitting the man in the head several times, the attacker kicked him while he cowered on the ground.
He then calmly walked away as others watched on in shock, adjusting his coat as he looked around.
The attacker was dressed in a shirt, tie and suit. He was calm as he walked away from the scene.
The victim was treated for facial bruises but not severely injured.
It is not clear if they know each other or what prompted the attack.
NYPD officials are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1-800-577-8477.
The man composed himself quickly readjusted his smart coat then left the station. Police are appealing to anyone who recognizes him to contact them
