On the morning of December 20, 1951, 12-year-old Kip Malone was walking to a store in Newfoundland, Canada, when he noticed a house on fire.
He saw a grandmother screaming from the top floor of the blazing home. “Save the children!” she begged. Kip bravely ran into the smoke-filled house and found a terrified 5-year-old girl. He tried to save her, but she refused to leave without her 3-year-old sister, who could not be found.
Kip would not think of leaving without the other child and searched everywhere for her. He looked underneath one of the beds and there she was. He carried the two children out of the house and brought them to safety.
Years passed, and Kip never stopped thinking about the two girls he saved, but he never heard anything about them. He had no idea that the girls’ grandmother died in the fire. The girls grew up without ever knowing who saved their lives because it was just too emotional to relive that horrible day their grandmother died.
Kip moved to Ontario, got married and raised a family. It was over 70 years later when Kip and his wife moved back to Newfoundland to retire.
Once they settled into their new home, Kip knocked on the door of his new neighbor, Margaret Fowler to introduce himself. Once they began chatting, they both realized they were from the same area. Kip told her about house fire of 1951, and how he always wondered what happened to the little girls he saved.
