A surgeon has shot to fame in China after completing seven operations without a break to ensure that his patients could get treatment in time.
A picture of him falling asleep following the procedures has become trending, drawing praises from web users who hailed him as a hero.
But the physician, named Dai Yu, stays humble. He told reporters it was his duty to provide the best care to his patients.
Dr. Dai is the deputy director at the Orthopaedic Department of Longgang Central Hospital in Shenzhen, southern China.
The picture was taken by one of his colleagues on Monday.
Dr. Dai told local TV station Longgang Channel that he and his colleagues had been tasked to perform 10 surgical operations on the day.
He said they had started working from around 8 am and carried out seven of the procedures without a break.
At around 5 pm, Dr. Dai decided to sit on the floor of the operating theatre to have a 10-minute break while his anesthetist colleagues were preparing for the next surgery.
He fell asleep and a colleague snapped a picture of him before uploading it onto social media.
Dr. Dai said after he woke up from the nap, he continued with the rest of the operations and didn’t leave the operating theatre until 9 pm.
Chinese web users were touched by the surgeon’s dedication.
One of them said: ‘Salute. Thanks for your effort.’
Another one wrote: ‘Chinese doctors are already the best! Well done.’
One patient praised the surgeon to Longgang Channel: ‘[I] was moved. [I want to] thank doctors for serving people.’
Dr. Dai said it was his responsibility to give patients treatment as soon as possible to help them recover.
He added that his goal was to further improve his surgical skills and make his operations textbook examples for his peers.
